Previous editions

As of 15 June 2022, the guidance will change due to The Building Regulations etc. (Amendment) (England) Regulations 20211 and the following two approved documents will be in force:

  • Approved Document L, Conservation of fuel and power, Volume 1: Dwellings2
  • Approved Document L, Conservation of fuel and power, Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellings3

These will replace the following four Approved Document L parts:

  • Approved Document L1A: Conservation of fuel and power in new dwellings (2013 edition with 2016 amendments)4 (PDF) Came into force on 6 April 2016
  • Approved Document L1B: conservation of fuel and power in existing dwellings, 2010 edition (incorporating 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2018 amendments)5 came into force on 5 April 2018
  • Approved Document L2A: Conservation of fuel and power in new buildings other than dwellings (2013 edition with 2016 amendments6 (PDF) Came into force on 6 April 2016
  • Approved Document L2B: Conservation of fuel and power in existing buildings other than dwellings, 2010 edition (incorporating 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2016 amendments)7 (PDF) Came into force on 6 April 2016
